World in 2030: Public Survey Report

The World in 2030: Public Survey Report was recently published by UNESCO. The report was published by the organisation based on the survey held between May 2020 and September 2020. The survey collected responses from more than 15,000 people from all over the world.

Key Findings of the Report

  1. According to the report, Climate Change, Violence and Conflict, Loss of Biodiversity and discrimination and inequality, water and housing, lack of food are the four biggest challenges to peaceful societies of 2030.
  2. According to the participants, education is the only crucial solution to many difficulties to be faced in 2030. However, the North Americans (US, Canada) believe in science and not in education.
  3. Apart from education, the only other solution is international cooperation.

Challenges

The top challenges to be faced in 2030 according to the report are as follows:

  1. Violence and Conflict
  2. Discrimination and Inequality
  3. Disinformation and Freedom of Expression
  4. Climate Change and Loss of Biodiversity
  5. Lack of food, water and housing
  6. Health and Disease
  7. Lack of Decent work and opportunities
  8. Political Participation and Democratic Principles
  9. Artificial Intelligence and New Technologies
  10. Traditions and Culture at risk

Asia Pacific

Climate change and biodiversity loss were the top concern in the Asia and Pacific region. The Asia Pacific respondents of the survey highlighted natural disaster risk, localised impacts and importance of culture as the other major challenges. The top solutions to address the concerns in Asia Pacific are as follows:

  1. Effective Health education
  2. Sharing of research and scientific knowledge
  3. Effective international cooperation
  4. Ensuring a health relationship with nature
  5. Ensuring access to reliable and accurate information

The top challenge in Sub-Saharan Africa, Arab states, Eastern Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean was also Climate change and biodiversity.

UNESCO

  1. UNESCO is United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation.
  2. It was established in 1945.
  3. The headquarters of UNESCO is located in Paris, France.
  4. Some of the major initiatives of UNESCO are as follows:
    • World Heritage List: UNESCO is responsible in providing the tag, “World Heritage Site” to a place. According to UNESCO, there are 1,121 World Heritage sites located in 167 countries.
    • Man and the Biosphere Programme: The programme aims to establish biosphere reserves. There are currently 701 biosphere reserves located in 124 countries. India has 18 biosphere reserves. Of these eleven have been recognised by the Man and the Biosphere Programme.
