CURRENT AFFAIRS OF 27th JANUARY, 2023

  1. International Holocaust Remembrance Day is observed on 27 January every year to remember the victims of the Holocaust, also known as the Shoah, which was the genocide of European Jews during World War II. The theme of 2023 is “Home and Belonging”. 
  2. On 23 January 2023, Banwari Lal Purohit, Governor of Punjab and Administrator of Chandigarh, inaugurated North India’s largest floating solar project of 2000 Wp (Kilowatt peak) at Water Works in Chandigarh.  
  3. The Grand Mosque Road in Makkah has featured the longest calligraphic painting in the world, the most recent addition to the holy city’s aesthetic appeal.  
  4. Vishakhapatnam Railway Station under East Coast Railway has been awarded the ‘Green Railway Station Certificate’ with the highest Platinum rating by the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) for adopting green concepts thereby reducing the adverse environmental impact. 
  5. A swallowtail butterfly disappearing from its previously known ranges from Myanmar and Southern China to Vietnam has been recorded for the first time in India in Arunachal Pradesh.
  6. Higher Education Minister in Kerala R Bindu announced that girls students above the age of 18 years will get maternity leave of 60 days. The required attendance percentage for female students will be 73 percent, including the menstrual leave, as against 75 percent earlier.
  7. England captain Ben Stokes has been named the International Cricket Council Test Player of the Year for 2022. 
  8. A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket carried more than four dozen Starlink satellites into the low-Earth orbit in a launch from the California coast.  
  9. Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation, which markets milk and dairy products under the Amul brand announced the appointment of Shamalbhai B Patel as its Chairman and Valamjibhai Humbal as Vice Chairman. 
  10. SBI General Insurance, a leading general insurance company in India, has partnered with Doers NGO to support the Himachal Pradesh police in reducing the number of road accidents. As part of its CSR program, SBI General has provided a well-equipped ambulance for immediate medical care for road accident victims in the Mandi district within the crucial ‘Golden Hour’.
  11. The Election Commission of India (ECI) hosted the 2nd International Conference on the theme ‘Use of Technology and Elections Integrity’ in New Delhi from 23 to 24 January, 2023. 
  12. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh felicitated the 25 winners of Veer Gatha 2.0 at an event organised in New Delhi on 25 January, 2023. 
  13. The Government of India has extended the tenure of Sangeeta Verma as acting Chairperson of the Competition Commission of India (CCI). 
  14. Shuttler Kunlavut Vitidsarn from Thailand won the India Open Badminton Championship 2023 by defeating Denmark’s Viktor Axelsen in the men’s singles by 22-20, 10-21 and 21-12. 
  15. The Jammu and Kashmir Government is set to host their first SARAS Fair 2023 from 4 to 14 February, 2023. 
  16. On 22 January 2023, Arjuna awardee Sabir Ali, also known as the ‘Ironman of India’ who won the decathlon gold at the 1981 Asian Athletics Championships in Tokyo passed away in New Delhi at the age of 67.
