Economist’s annual survey of World’s Most Liveable Cities

According to annual survey of World’s most liveable cities 2021, Covid-19 pandemic has shaken up rankings of liveable cities.

 

Key Findings of report

  • Auckland is the most liveable city in 2021 because of its successful approach in containing pandemic.
  • which is followed by Osaka & Tokyo in Japan, Adelaide in Australia and Wellington in New Zealand. All these countries had swift response to pandemic.
  • According to the report, metropolises in Australia, Japan and New Zealand leaping ahead of metropolises in Europe.
  • Life remains most difficult in Damascus because of Syria’s ongoing civil war.
  • Most notable rise was by Honolulu, Hawaii in United States. It came to 14th position by moved up 46 places. Ranking improved because of its containment measures and fast vaccination programme.

European cities fared poorly

Vienna, which was world’s most liveable city during 2018-20, fell to 12th place. Eight of the top ten biggest falls in rankings goes to European cities. Port city of Hamburg in northern Germany fell by 34 places to 47th position in the list. European cities performed poorly because of increasing stress on hospital resources which resulted in a “deteriorated healthcare score”. Pressure on European health systems also affected culture and overall livability because of restrictions on movement.
