Italy wins the Euro 2020 trophy

Italy won their second European Championship trophy after defeating England by 3-2 in penalty shoot-out in the final of Euros 2020 trophy at Wembley Stadium in London.

 

Highlights

  • This is the first major international trophy won by Italy since their 2006 FIFA World Cup victory.
  • The Azzurri (The Blues in Italy) had last won the continental title back in 1968.
  • Italy had also reached the final in Euro 2000 and Euro 2012, but they lost to France and Spain respectively.
  • England was also aiming for its first European Championship trophy and first major international football title after winning FIFA World Cup at home in 1966.

UEFA European Football Championship

It is the primary association football competition among senior men’s national teams of members of Union of European Football Associations (UEFA). It determines the continental champion of Europe. The Competition has been being held every four years since 1960. Euro 2020 was postponed until 2021 because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic in Europe. It was originally called as “European Nations’ Cup”. Its named changed to current form in 1968. In the tournament, host nations qualify automatically while other members are required to compete in qualifying process.

Union of European Football Associations (UEFA)

UEFA is the administrative body for football, beach soccer and futsal in Europe. It is among six continental confederations of world football’s governing body FIFA. It comprises 55 national association members. Apart from representing national football associations of Europe, it runs nation & club competitions such as UEFA European Championship, UEFA Nations League, UEFA Europa League, UEFA Europa Conference League, UEFA Champions League, and UEFA Super Cup. It also controls the prize money, regulations and media rights for these competitions.
