CURRENT AFFAIRS OF 11th JANUARY, 2023

  1. National Road Safety Week is annually observed across India from 11-17 January to create awareness about the importance of road safety and to highlight the importance of road safety measures to prevent accidents. Road Safety Week 2023 is observed under “Swachhata Pakhwada”, to propagate the cause of safer roads for all.
  2. National Human Trafficking Day is observed on 11 January every year to raise awareness about the plight of human trafficking victims, as well as to promote and protect their rights.
  3. e-Nam, the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare’s initiative, has won the Platinum Award in the Digital Empowerment of Citizens category in Digital India Awards 2022.
  4. Chetan Sharma was reappointed as the chairman of the senior selection committee of BCCI on 7 January, 2023. 
  5. Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID) has been ranked first in Services Sectors across categories in Department of Public Enterprises (DPE) survey.
  6. ICICI Prudential Life Insurance has announced the launch of its ‘360° Financial Protection’ with its digital-first campaign featuring cricketer Suryakumar Yadav.
  7. Union Health and Family Welfare and Chemicals and Fertilisers Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya has announced that the country’s first-ever coal gasification-based Talcher Fertiliser plant in Odisha will be ready by October 2024.
  8. Republican leader Kevin McCarthy has been elected as the the 55th speaker of the US House of Representatives.
  9. Journalist Tamal Bandyopadhyay’s book ‘Roller Coaster: An Affair with Banking’ has been launched.
  10. Bank of Singapore (BoS), the private banking arm of Oversea-Chinese Banking Corporation (OCBC), has appointed Jason Moo as its new CEO. 
  11. Jalna district police and Nagpur city police in Maharashtra have been awarded the Best Police Unit Awards for 2021 in the state under different classes for maintaining law and order, use of modern technology, and evolving community policing and administration.
  12. The Bihar Government has begun caste surveys in different parts of the state on 7 January, 2023. 
  13. Cricket South Africa (CSA) has confirmed that Proteas all-rounder Dwaine Pretorius has retired from international cricket with immediate effect. 
  14. The Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) has developed an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) to carry out logistic operations in the Himalayan frontier. 
  15. The Netherlands’ Tallon Griekspoor won his maiden ATP World Tour title in Men’s singles category in Pune on 7 January, 2023. 
  16. Padma Awardee Dr Tehemton Erach Udwadia, an Indian Surgeon and Gastroenterologist, who was known as the ‘father of laparoscopic surgery in India’ passed away, at the age of 88.
