  1. R Vishnu Prasad was awarded ‘The Most Distinguished Scientist of the Year 2022’ at Vigyan Bhawan, Delhi by Union Minister Anurag Thakur on 20 January, 2023.
  2. Jammu & Kashmir becomes the first union territory in India to completely switch to a digital method of administration, leading the way in the digital transformation of governance.
  3. Bhopal Declaration was released after discussions in the two-day ‘Think-20’ meeting under the G20, held in Bhopal from 16-17 January, 2023.
  4. A Memorandum of Agreement was signed between the Indian Ports Association (IPA) and Research & Information System for Developing Countries (RIS) for setting up a Centre for Maritime Economy and Connectivity in New Delhi on 19 January, 2023.
  5. A rare orange-colored bat known as a ‘Painted Bat’ was spotted in the Banana plantation in Parali Bodal village of Kanger Valley National Park in Bastar, Chhattisgarh. It is characterized by bright orange and black wings.

  9. Astronomers from McGill University in Canada and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru have used data from the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) in Pune to detect a radio signal originating from atomic hydrogen in an extremely distant galaxy. 
  10. Himalayan Cataract Project co-founder and noted Nepali ophthalmologist Dr. Sanduk Ruit has won a top civilian award of Bahrain, the ISA Award 2021-22 for Service to Humanity. 
  11. The Rwanda fast bowler, Geovanis Uwase has been suspended by ICC from bowling in international cricket with immediate effect after her action was found illegal at Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup.

  16. On 19 January, 2023, renowned Assamese poet and recipient of the Jnanpith Award and Padma Shri awardee Nilamani Phookan passed away in Guwahati, Assam at the age of 89.
