  1. World Press Freedom Day is annually observed across the globe on 3 May to increase understanding about the significance of a press that is free and not influenced by external forces. The theme of World Press Freedom Day 2023 is “Shaping a Future of Rights: Freedom of Expression as a Driver for all other human rights”.
  2. The Indian Government has officially announced the appointment of Justice TS Sivagnanam as the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court.
  3. India has overtaken Australia to regain the number one position in the ICC Men’s Test team rankings.
  4. At the 100th episode of ‘Mann Ki Baat’, a book called ‘Collective Spirit, Concrete Action’ written by Shashi Shekhar Vempati, former CEO of Prasar Bharati (2017-2022) was launched.
  5. Dr M.N. Nandakumara, a renowned Sanskrit scholar and Executive Director of the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan centre in London, has been awarded an honorary MBE by King Charles III for his contributions to Indian classical arts in Britain.  
  6. Kpler data has revealed that India has become the largest supplier of refined fuels to Europe, surpassing Saudi Arabia.
  7. The government on 29 April, 2023 announced the appointment of Debadatta Chand as the Managing Director (MD) of Bank of Baroda (BOB).
  8. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman attended the 56th Annual General Meeting of the Board of Directors of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) in South Korea on 2 May, 2023.
  9. India has announced that it will participate in the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO)’s Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) and the Long-Term Aspirational Goals (LTAG) from 2027.  
  10. The Indian Navy and Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) collaborated to conduct the successful maiden test trial of ‘Air Droppable Container-150 (ADC)’ from IL38SD aircraft off the coast of Goa on 27 April, 2023.
  11. Japanese table tennis star Kasumi Ishikawa, who won three women’s team medals at three consecutive Olympic Games, announced her retirement on 1 May, 2023.
  12. Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras have developed a machine learning-based computational tool called ‘GBMDriver (GlioBlastoma Mutiforme Drivers)’ to improve the detection of cancer-causing tumours in the brain and spinal cord.  
  13. India and Russia have agreed to explore the possibility of accepting each other’s payment cards, RuPay and Mir, for hassle-free payments between the two countries.
  14. Award-winning author Amitav Ghosh’s new book ‘Smoke and Ashes: A Writer’s Journey Through Opium’s Hidden Histories’ is all set to be released in India on 15 July, 2023.
  15. During the India-UK Science & Innovation Council meeting, chaired by Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh and attended by UK Minister George Freeman, it was announced that the two countries will collaborate to establish the India-UK ‘NET Zero’ Innovation Virtual Centre.
  16. Noted historian Ranajit Guha on 28 April, 2023 passed away at his residence in Austria at the age of 100.
