1. World Hand Hygiene Day is a global healthcare event observed annually on 5 May to raise awareness and spread the importance of handwashing to prevent the spread of infections. The theme of 2023 is “Together, we can accelerate action to prevent infections and antimicrobial resistance in health care and build a culture of safety and quality in which hand hygiene improvement is given high priority”.  
2. International Day of the Midwife is annually observed across the globe on 5 May to celebrate and recognize the contribution of midwives across the world. The theme of International Day of the Midwife 2023 is “Together again: from evidence to reality”. 
3. World Cartoonists Day is annually observed across the globe on 5 May to celebrate the art of cartooning and the creative minds behind it which have provided entertainment and commentary on society for over a century.
4. In 2019, the 40^th session of UNESCO’s General Conference decided to proclaim 5 May of each year as World Portuguese Language Day in honor of the Portuguese language and Lusophone cultures.
5. African World Heritage Day is annually observed across the globe on 5 May to raise awareness about the importance of preserving the cultural and natural heritage of Africa.
6. The former Mastercard CEO and the first Indian origin Ajay Banga has been confirmed as the 14^th President of the World Bank for a period of five years, starting from 2 June, 2023.
7. The Braille edition of the Assamese dictionary Hemkosh, with 90,640 words printed in 21 volumes and 6 parts, across 10,279 pages and weighing 80.800 kg, has been adjudged as the largest bilingual Braille dictionary by the Guinness World Records.
8. Maria Stepanova, a renowned Russian writer currently residing in Berlin, has been awarded the Leipzig Book Prize for European Understanding in 2023 for her volume of poetry entitled ‘Mädchen ohne Kleider’ (Girls Without Clothes).
9. The Public Enterprises Selection Board (PSEB) recommended Central Coalfields CMD Polavarapu Mallikharjuna Prasad as the next Chairman and Managing Director of Coal India (CIL), effective from 1 July, 2023.  
10. Nijel Amos, a 2012 Olympic silver medalist in the men’s 800m run, has been banned for three years for doping.
11. Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao is set to introduce the ‘Geetha Karmikula Bhima’ (insurance for toddy tappers) on the lines of Rythu Bhimafor farmers, which is currently being implemented in the state.
12. A survey on the degree of innovation among manufacturing firms found that Karnataka, overall, is the most ‘innovative’ State, followed by Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Daman and Diu (DNH&DD), Telangana, and Tamil Nadu.
13. A report released by UK-based Business & Human Rights Resource centre has put India and Brazil among the most dangerous places in the world for human rights and labour activists.
14. NTPC Limited has marked its first overseas capacity addition, beginning with Bangladesh.
15. Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Anurag Singh Thakur launched the Logo, jersey, mascot and anthem of the Khelo India University games 2023(KIUG 2021) at the Indira Gandhi Pratishthan in Gomti Nagar, Lucknow on 5 May, 2023.
16. Global Chess League (GCL), a joint venture between FIDE (International Chess Federation) and Tech Mahindra, announced Dubai as the venue for the inaugural edition.
